Here's the solution: Download Hamachi. Set up Hamachi so you're both lan active. Set co-up to lan. You have to stay at the same spot in game to find eachother in the co-up menu. It can take up to a minute of searching before you find eachother. You will not have bother with disconnecting again when playing co-up.
In the future any game that says Players 2-4 in offline section means split screen co-op. Not true, look at the game Rage. It clearly states co-op 2-4 for xbox 360 console, and split-screen works

Actually if you have a router/AP, you can play in the LAN or WLAN network, jsut make sure that the 2 PS3 are in the same network and have the Dead Island network options to Coopereative and LAN play. The list take time to refresh, but work, and don't have lag compared
